Napa County: Fire Burns In Salvage Yard Near Airport

BREAKING: The fire Sunday afternoon produced billowing smoke visible from parts of the North Bay, East Bay and San Francisco.

NAPA VALLEY, CA — Smoke from a fire that broke out south of the Napa County Airport Sunday has been visible throughout neighboring counties, with smoke likely to continue throughout the night, county officials said. The fire in an auto salvage yard in the 1800 block of Green Island Road in the American Canyon area has destroyed two structures and dozens of cars, according to Napa County officials. Resources will remain on scene overnight, officials said.

The sheriff's office in an alert sent just after 3:30 p.m. warned people to avoid the area.

"CAL FIRE/Napa County Fire Department is responding to an auto salvage yard on fire at the end of Green Island Road -- 50-100 cars burning. CALFIRE, American Canyon Fire, City of Napa Fire Department all responding. Air units and on the ground. Please stay away from the area," Napa County officials said in a Facebook post.

"Several cars were reported on fire, and flames were near the Pacific Auto Salvage wrecking yard," NBC Bay Area reported.

Plumes of smoke billowed from the fire Sunday afternoon — visible from parts of the North Bay, East Bay and even San Francisco, according to reports on social media.

It was not immediately clear if a vegetation fire broke out first, then spread to the salvage yard — or if the blaze originated within the salvage yard.

Cal Fire Deputy Chief Scott McLean said firefighters stopped the forward progress of the fire, which was first reported at 2:25 p.m.

No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation, McLean said.
