Napa Sheepdog Has Litter Of 17 Pups

A Maremma Sheepdog gave birth to 17 puppies on a Napa farm this week, which may break the California record for the breed.


NAPA - A Maremma Sheepdog may have broken the California and world record for the largest litter of puppies ever recorded for its own breed.

Napa farmer John Costanzo says Stella, a 3-year-old Maremma Sheepdog, had 17 puppies.

β€œSix to eight is normal,” Costanzo told CBS5. β€œSeventeen is insane.”

He said the vet told them on the spot Stella set a record for the state. It’s also the largest litter ever recorded for her breed.

β€œWe were blown away, it’s going to take forever to feed them,” said Costanzo.

The owner says Maremma Sheepdogs are a breed of livestock guardian dogs from central Italy.
