Saturday's Marathon "College" Precedes Napa Valley Marathon Sunday

College to feature women's running leaders.

Although Sunday's 35th Annual Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon is sold out, admission is open and free for Saturday's 2013 Marathon College.

On Saturday, running legends such as Joan Benoit-Samuelson will address the Marathon College under the keynote theme, "Emergence of Women in Marathoning."

A special presentation on the subject of women pioneers in the sport will highlight the March 2 daylong Marathon College.

Benoit-Samuelson, winner of the first women’s Olympic marathon, will be among the panel of  female pioneers who also include Jacqueline Hansen, Nina Kuscsik and Lorraine Moller. They will put into perspective the giant strides women have made in the past half-century.

The "Marathon College" on Saturday is free and open to the public.

For the marathon itself, a sold-out field of 2,800 runners will start the marathon Sunday at 7 a.m. sharp on the Silverado Trail in Calistoga.
