Cop Calls: Burglars Target Unlocked Homes and Garages

In one case, an unknown suspect forced open a garage door and let the victim's dogs loose into the backyard.

Newport Beach police say burglars targeted unlocked homes and garages in the Dovers Shores and Mariners communities this week.

  • Police say on Thursday, Jan. 12 between 6:30 and 10:30 p.m., an unknown suspect entered a home in the 2500 block of Vista Baya through an unlocked rear sliding glass door. The victim reported jewelry missing from the home.
  • According to police, sometime between Wednesday, Jan. 11 and Thursday, Jan. 12, an unknown suspect entered an unsecured garage at a home in the 1300 block of Antigue Way. The victim reported a laptop and briefcase missing from the home.
  • On Thursday, Jan. 5 between 10:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., an unknown suspect forced open a side pedestrian garage door to enter a home in the 2100 Block of Santiago. Police say the suspect then let the dogs out of the house, into the rear yard and closed the door.

Home Security Tips:
- Close and lock all doors, windows and garage door.

- All exterior doors should be equipped with a deadbolt lock, which should always be used have a security strike plate, attached with a minimum of two, three inch screws.

- If you have an alarm, always activate it when you are away.

- Use photo cells or timers to turn both interior and exterior lights on and off.
