Fire Damages Motor Home and Barn

A horse was threatened by the fire, but was quickly moved to safety.

A fire ripped through a Newport Beach motor home and barn today, but no injuries were reported, a fire official said.

The blaze was reported about 9:22 a.m. on Southwest Cypress Street in the Santa Ana Heights neighborhood, according to Jennifer Schulz of the Newport Beach Fire Department. Responding firefighters found a 27 foot-long motor home engulfed in flames and learned a horse was in danger due to the fire igniting the eaves of a nearby barn.

"The firefighters found one horse in a corral at the rear of the property," Schulz said. "The horse was not injured and was moved to a safe area by neighbors."

The fire appears to have started in the engine compartment of the motor home. The owner had been attempting to fix the vehicle over the last several weeks, but had not been working on it the today, Schulz said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It caused an estimated $15,000 in damages to the motor home and barn.
