Update: Man Arrested by SWAT After Barricade

Geoffrey Patton was wanted for a felony larceny charge out of New York.

Newport Beach SWAT stormed a home today and arrested a felony larceny suspect from New York who had barricaded himself inside for hours.

The standoff had led police to evacuate homes and close off traffic on 25th Street. U.S. marshals attempted to serve an arrest warrant issued in Westchester County, N.Y., but Geoffrey Patton refused to come out of the home in the 100 block of 25th Street, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Laura Vega.

Local SWAT officers were summoned about 1:15 p.m., said Kathy Lowe of the Newport Beach Police Department. "We evacuated the immediate area as a precautionary measure,'' Lowe said.

Police stormed the house about 6:15 p.m. and brought Patton out, Lowe said. A tip led authorities to Newport Beach, so the U.S. Marshals Service was asked to serve the arrest warrant, Vega said. Authorities did not know if Patton, who has several weapons registered in his name, had any weapons on him, Vega said, adding that he "has a violent criminal history.''
