Study: Newport Beach Commute Among Easiest in OC

Out of 483 communities nationwide with populations between 50,000 and 100,000, Newport Beach ranks 197th.

A new study reports most commuters in Newport Beach aren't stuck in their car too long while trying to get to work, with 40 percent driving no more than 29 minutes before reaching their job.

The study, done by On Numbers, a Bizjournals.com blog, compiled data from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2009 American Community Survey. When compared to 483 medium-size communities surveyed nationwide, Newport Beach ranked 197th in terms of its ease of commute for residents, which made it the second-easiest commute for a community of its size in Orange County. Tustin is in first place, ranking 196th on the overall list.

About 30 percent of Newport Beach commuters reported spending 14 minutes or less commuting, 16 percent say their commute takes 30-44 minutes and approximately 11 percent reported a commute time of 45 minutes or more, the study showed.

The study awarded points for every commuter who takes less than 30 minutes to get from home to his or her job, and it took away points for every commuter above that threshold. A community designated as medium-sized was one with a population of between 50,000 and 100,000.
