Firefighters Douse Blaze at High-Rise Near Fashion Island

The fire appears to have started in the air conditioning unit above the computer server room. No injuries were reported.

A fire broke out at a high-rise office building today near Fashion Island, but firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and no injuries were reported, a fire official said.

The blaze was reported at 8:02 a.m. at 610 Newport Center Dr. Jennifer Schulz, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department, said at the time of the call firefighters were just arriving at the location for an inspection.

"Fire units immediately searched the building and found light smoke on the 12th floor, with heavier smoke on the 13th floor," Schulz said in a released statement.

Firefighters called for additional units and located the fire in a computer room in a suite on the 13th floor. 

"The fire appears to have started in the air conditioning unit above the computer server room," Schulz said. "Damages from the fire are estimated at $3,000."

Newport Beach police closed Newport Center Drive from Santa Maria to Santa Rosa for about 40 minutes while firefighters battled the fire. All streets have been reopened, Schulz said.
