50 Gallons of Sewage Flows from Manhole on Devonshire Street

Sewer line believed to have been clogged by the roots of a tree.

About 50 gallons of sewage flowed from a manhole cover onto a street in Chatsworth Wednesday.

The problem on Devonshire Street, about a 100 yards east of Corbin Avenue, was reported about 9:30 a.m.

Firefighters notified the city's Bureau of Sanitation, which responded about 20 minutes later to find sewage flowing onto the street, because of a sewer line believed to have been clogged by the roots of a tree, said Paul Blasman, a sanitation and wastewater manager with the bureau.

Blasman said a city crew unblocked the line and was working to vacuum up the sewage. He said the sewer line was undamaged. The cleanup operation did not cause a major backup near the intersection, he said.
