Human Remains Found Near Chatsworth Brush Fire

Authorities found human remains while responding to a brush fire in Chatsworth.

CHATSWORTH, CA — Authorities found human remains in Chatsworth Tuesday when responding to a brush fire. The remains were unrelated to the fire, authorities said.

The fire, which broke out around 1:31 p.m. near 11160 N De Soto Ave, was contained around two acres acres in less than two hours, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The fire started at a quarter-acre and spread quickly, LAFD Public Information Officer Erik Scott.

"Additionally, we located some bones that appear to be human remains that are unrelated to this fire. LAFD Arson section is working with LAPD and have requested an LA [County] Coroner-Medical Examiner to perform an investigation and determine cause of death," Scott said.

The fire did not damage any structures, and there were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, according to Scott said.

The fire prompted a Sig Alert on the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway De Soto Avenue off-ramp around 2:14 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol.
