WATCH: Funeral For LA Police Officer Who Died In Training Accident

The Los Angeles Police Department on Wednesday held a funeral service for Officer Houston Tipping, who died in a training accident.

NORTHRIDGE, CA — The Los Angeles Police Department on Wednesday held a funeral service for Officer Houston Tipping, who died on May 29 after injuring his spinal cord in a training exercise.

The service was scheduled for at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hall of Liberty at the Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills, located at 6300 Forest Lawn Drive. Watch the service live from CBS Los Angeles.

Tipping, 32, was acting as a bike instructor for a training scenario that involved him grappling with another officer at Elysian Park Academy. Tipping fell to the floor and injured his spinal cord, according to an LAPD statement. Nearby officers performed CPR, and the Los Angeles Fire Department transported to LA County-USC Medical Center.

The department planned a procession on June 3 to escort tipping's body from Los Angeles County + USCMedical Center to the Los Angeles County coroner's facility.

Tipping was very outgoing and one of the station's most productive officers, said Lt. Nemechek with the Devonshire Community Police Station. Many younger officers looked up to Tipping for guidance and mentorship, Nemechek said.

"A bright and uplifting young man with a full life in front of him. Grief, sorrow and sadness," LAPD Chief Michel Moore said in a tweet.

The department opened an investigation into the training accident, according to a statement from LAPD.

Tipping is survived by his mother, Shirley; father, Richard; sister, Kathleen; brother, Tyler; grandfather, LeRoy; and grandmothers, Peggy, Kathleen and Lynn, according to the department.
