Alleged Illegal Storage of Meds Lands 2 Men in Jail

A pair of pharmacists are held on suspicion of possessing a number of prescription drugs outside of a pharmacy setting.

A Chatsworth man was arrested last week for allegedly storing prescription medication at his home in an unnaproved manner, while his friend, a former pharmacy owner, was booked on suspicion of illegally transporting the pills to the home, according to the Venturay County Sheriff's Department.

On April 30, deputies were responding to a report of a stolen gun in the 100 block of Ventura Way in Chatsworth near the Ventura County border, a Nixle alert read.

When at the scene, deputies grew concerned with the amount of "highly addictive" opiates at the residence of the man who reported the stolen weaopon, John Shafer, 60, a licensed pharmacist, according to the alert

An investigation revealed that Shafer was storing pharmaceutical medication for friend Gregg Endless, 60, who owned a pharmacy that closed a few years ago, authorities said.

Deputies also learned that Shafer was allegedly detoxing at least one person at his residence with medication in violation of the California Health and Safety Code.

The reportedly stolen handgun was later found at Shafer's home, according to authorities.

Endless was arrested May 2 on suspicion of transferring medication to Shafer in an illegal manner. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Shafer turned himself in May 3 at East County Sheriff’s Station and was booked for allegedly storing the prescription pills in an unapproved manner. He's being held on $10,000 bail.

Additional charges are expected to be filed, the Nixle alert read.
