The LAPD said officers gave "repeated commands" for Hayes to drop his weapon and he refused to comply. At one point Hayes raised his gun and fired at the officers and one or more officers opened fire, according to police.
"Hayes then threw the firearm onto the street and raised his hands," police said.
"As officers approached to detain him, he clenched his fist and attempted to strike them. Officers took Hayes to the ground and eventually took him into custody," according to the LAPD.
No one was injured in the exchange, police said.
A loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol and a 15-round magazine was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence, police said.
