10-Year-Old Passenger Breaks Arm When Brother Crashes Vehicle While Fleeing Cops: Police

The officer tried to stop the vehicle but the driver turned off the headlights and fled, according to police, who said the cop gave chase.

SIMI VALLEY, CA — Four people were injured — including a 10-year-old who suffered a broken arm — when a vehicle crashed while fleeing police Monday in Simi Valley, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., when an officer saw a vehicle driven by Juan Angel Martinez-Martinez disobey a stop sign at Simi Town Center and East Jefferson ways, police said.

The officer tried to stop the vehicle but the driver turned off the headlights and fled south on Erringer Road, according to police, who said the officer gave chase. The pursuit lasted about two minutes, during which the driver ran several red lights, police said.

The vehicle hit a parked car at Erringer Road and Covington Avenune, according to police, who said all four occupants were taken to the hospital. The passengers included Martinez-Martinez’s mother, brother and 10-year-old sibling, police said. In addition to the broken arm, the child suffered other injuries, according to police, who said the other three people in the car suffered minor injuries.

Martinez-Martinez was taken into custody and charged with evading an officer causing injury, reckless driving while evading, evading an officer with three or more vehicle code violations, and child endangerment, police said. He was later booked into Ventura County jail, according to police.
