The Sky Coyote Is Watching Over Chatsworth
The Chumash looked toward the heavens and also saw swordfish and dolphins.

"If they weren’t in a super-secret location polluted with radioactive waste, the cave paintings at the old Rocketdyne facility in Burro Flats near Chatsworth might tell you a little something about the way the Chumash conceived of the universe," writes Ben Baeder in the Downey Beat.
He's reporting on a presentation by Pomona College Astronomy Professor Bryan Penprase who has collected the myths and tales of the sky. Penprase's new book is The Power of Stars: How Celestial Observations Have Shaped Civilization.
"The Chumash saw the sky coyote, who kept watch up near the North Pole. They also saw swordfish and dolphins, who used to be people before they fell off the rainbow bridge," Baeder reports. "And earthquakes? The world was built on a base of snakes, and every now and then they would slither along and shake up the world above."
