Too Many Backyard Fruits? Donate on Citrus Sunday

Local neighborhood councils wants residents to donate oranges and other fruits growing on their properties instead of throwing them away or letting them rot.

Up to your neck in backyard oranges? Pluck them and donate them this weekend at the 8th annual Citrus Sunday event benefiting food banks throughout the San Fernando Valley.

Oranges can be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at many locations throughout L.A. Council District 12. Check below for a list of drop-off sites.

Other kinds of fruits will be accepted as well, but oranges are preferred because they're more durable.

"[Apples and peaches] are much more sensitive to handle," said Margaret Landers, event organizer and board member of the Northridge South Neighborhood Council. "Citrus handles well."

And for those who bring lots of fruit, a tax deduction is eligible.

Donated fruits are to be weighed followed by the printing of a receipt, which can be given to an accountant to go toward a deductible, Landers said.

And there are people who bring lots and lots of oranges. Last year, Landers said one person brought 300 pounds of fruit, while the 2012 total topped 2,000 pounds.

Also, in honor of the event taking place on Cinco de Mayo, chips and salsa will be offered to everyone who stops by to donate.
