'Metamorphoses' Opens April 20 on MSA Stage

Diving in from its at the Ohlone Theatre Festival, Theatre Department presents Mary Zimmerman's Tony-winning play "Metamorphoses" directed by Rodney Franz. 

Based on Ovid's transformation myths, the play subtly mixes ancient Greek stories of pathos and tragedy with contemporary language, humor and thought, all enacted in and around a large pool of water in the center of the stage. The themes of love, the inevitability of change, and the human ability to adapt to change are timeless, as is amply demonstrated by the sometimes eerie closeness of a vignette to the original lines from Ovid, which still manage to resonate with modern viewers. 

Time Magazine raves "... Zimmerman's lovely, deeply affecting work...shows that theater can provide not just escape but sometimes a glimpse of the divine." 

Due to mature themes, viewer discretion is advised.

Franz is mixing in an element of the classic Greek chorus.  "Our students are doing beautiful, mature work. I am very proud of them," he said.

"Metamorphoses" opens at 7 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the Performing Arts Center at the Marin School of the Arts, 625 Arthur St., Novato. Shows continue at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 22, 27, and 29, and at 2 p.m. matinees Sundays, April 22 and 29.
