NOVATO, CA — Novato police officers will deploy Friday evening to staff a DUI checkpoint to screen drivers for signs of intoxication heading into Labor Day weekend.

The police department will stand up the checkpoint at an undisclosed location based on data showing previous crashes involving impaired driving, officials announced Wednesday. Police reminded drivers that impairment can come from sources other than alcohol, including marijuana and certain prescriptions or over-the-counter medications.

Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI can expect to pay more than $13,000 in fines and penalties, in addition to having their license suspended.
