MARIN COUNTY, CA — The County of Marin voted a resounding yes on Proposition 50, passing it with over 80 percent of the vote.

With all 58 precincts reporting as of 8 a.m. Wednesday, Marin County registered voters casted 66,449 yes votes compared to the 15,992 no votes to pass Prop. 50.

Proposition 50, supported by Democrats and Gov. Gavin Newsom, addressed a gerrymandering effort in Texas backed by President Donald Trump to maintain his party's congressional control.

In July, Trump directed Texas Gov. Greg Abbot to redistrict his state to gain five Republican congressional districts. This move, signed into law on August 29, aimed to help the GOP retain control of Congress. In response, Newsom and California Democrats devised a plan to redraw their state's district maps, potentially securing five new seats for Democrats.

Unlike the proposals from Texas Republicans and other states, this proposal was presented to voters, who determined if the state can proceed with redrawing the maps.

It's crucial to understand that with the passing of Prop 50 passes, Democrats are not guaranteed those seats automatically. The process for that will follow.

A "yes" vote on Prop 50 meant the state would have used new congressional maps drawn by the legislature that would have taken effect in 2026. A "no" vote would have meant current congressional district maps drawn by California's independent commission would have been used until that same commission drew new maps following the 2030 U.S. Census.
