Inmate Dies At Marin County Jail

Officials said a deputy doing routine checks discovered an inmate in need of immediate medical attention early Thursday.

SAN RAFAEL, CA β€” An inmate died Thursday inside the Marin County Jail after a deputy found them in need of medical attention, according to the sheriff's office.

Officials said the deputy found the inmate inside their cell at 5:45 a.m. and called for assistance from the San Rafael Fire Department, attempting life-saving measures until medics arrived. The fire department attempted further measures but declared the inmate dead within a few minutes.

The sheriff's office said the Novato Police Department would complete an independent investigation into the death. The Sonoma County Coroners Division will determine the cause and manner of death, including a full post-mortem exam. Officials said the inmate's identity would be released after notifying their next of kin.
