Jail Inmate Found Dead Monday Hung Himself, Police Say

Novato PD handled the investigation into the death of 45-year-old San Rafael man who had a DJ business.

A Marin County jail inmate who was found dead in his cell on Monday hanged himself, a sergeant said Thursday.

Marin County sheriff's deputies found 45-year-old Deymitreeus Sessoms unresponsive in his cell just before noon and began emergency resuscitation, Marin County sheriff's Lt. Barry Heying said.

Paramedics from the San Rafael Fire Department responded at noon and pronounced Sessoms dead.

Sessoms had been arrested by San Rafael police Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit-and-run and a violation of probation. He was booked into jail at 2:30 a.m. Monday, Novato police Lt. Dave Jeffries  said.

Novato police investigated Sessoms' death in accordance with a countywide in-custody death protocol.

Novato police Lt. John McCarthy would not disclose specific information about how Sessoms hanged himself.

Police Sgt. Keith Heiden said the autopsy on Sessoms’ body by Sonoma County coroner's office did not identify any apparent natural disease or attribute any other cause of death.
