Novato Police Chief Resigns, Citing 'Personal Reasons'

Novato's police chief handed in her resignation Thursday evening after less than a year on the job.

NOVATO, CA — Novato Police Chief Beth Johnson announced her resignation early Thursday evening, effective immediately.

Johnson resigned for "personal reasons", according to an announcement made by the city. She officially became Novato's police chief on July 4, 2022.

The Novato City Council and city staff offered their thanks to Johnson for her service to the community, also wishing her success with her career.

Hank Schreeder will serve as interim police chief. Schreeder retired as Santa Rosa's police chief in 2019 and previously filled the role of Novato's interim police chief after Police Chief Matthew McCaffrey retired in December 2021.

During this temporary period, Schreeder will be paid an hourly rate of $108.94. He is not eligible for any further salary or benefits such as health insurance or further retirement incentives, according to the city's announcement.
