NUSD Appoints New Superintendent

Dr. Jan La Torre-Derby has come out of retirement to serve as NUSD superintendent for the 2021-2022 school year.

NOVATO, CA — Less than two months after naming Dr. Jan La Torre-Derby interim superintendent, the Novato Unified School District made the longtime administrator’s appointment permanent.

The NUSD’s Board of Trustees at its regularly scheduled Tuesday meeting appointed Derby superintendent for the 2021-2022 school year at its regular board meeting.

Marin County Office of Education (MCOE) Superintendent Mary Jane Burke appointed Derby to serve as the district's interim superintendent in June.

She replaced Kris Cosca, who announced his resignation as the district’s top administrator on June 21.

Derby previously served as NUSD’s Superintendent for eights before retiring in 2011.

She first joined the NUSD in 1993 served as assistant superintendent and director of student services. She also served as the Ross Valley School District’s superintendent.

“I am delighted to be back at NUSD to support the district in reestablishing systems of support for students, staff and the community,” Derby said in a statement.

“I would like an opportunity to express gratitude to Superintendent Derby for coming out of retirement to work with NUSD at this time,” Trustee Derek Knell said in a statement.
