Officials ID Man Killed In Novato Crash

Detectives are still investigating the circumstances of the crash but said it coincided with inclement weather and wet roads Saturday.

NOVATO, CA β€” A man died Saturday after losing control of his SUV on Highway 101 and rolling onto a frontage road in Novato, according to the sheriff's office.

Marin County authorities identified the victim Monday as Thomas Wayne Powell, 74, of Cotati.

The sheriff's office said a 911 caller reported a crash near the 5800 block of Nave Drive around 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Investigators learned the SUV was traveling north on the highway when Powell lost control, hitting several objects before coming to a stop north of Hamilton Parkway.

Medics rushed to the scene and found the man unconscious and trapped inside a heavily damaged vehicle. Crews worked to remove Powell from the SUV and determined he was in cardiopulmonary arrest, officials said. Medics attempted to resuscitate him and rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, Powell died from his injuries shortly after his arrival.

The sheriff's office said a full investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash was underway, along with a forensic examination and routine toxicology testing. Investigators said the crash coincided with "notably inclement" weather and wet roadways.
