Patron, Allegedly Drunk, Blocks Medics from Helping Ailing Man at Saloon

Novato man arrested after trying to prevent medical personnel from putting a man into an ambulance.

A 53-year-old Novato man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of interfering with paramedics who were treating someone who suffered a medical emergency at a Bolinas restaurant, the Marin County Sheriff's Office said Friday.

A bartender at Smiley's Saloon called for help at 8:10 p.m. and sheriff's deputies arrived along with paramedics from the Bolinas Fire Department, Lt. Barry Heying said. While the first-responders were trying to help the elderly man, a Novato man at the bar blocked their access to an ambulance and appeared to be intoxicated, Heying said.

Stuart J. Sommers was taken into custody after a brief struggle and booked at Marin County Jail on charges of obstructing emergency personnel and public intoxication.
