Smoke, Dust Billow From Nearly Extinguished Novato Blaze

The fire began at the Recology Sonoma Marin landfill at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

NOVATO, CA — Firefighters in Novato are in what they hope are the final stages of putting out a large debris fire adjacent to U.S. Highway 101 that is causing a lot of smoke and dust, a spokesperson for the Novato Fire Protection District said Wednesday.

The fire began at the Recology Sonoma Marin landfill at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to Battalion Chief Jeff Whittet. The fire appears to be accidental and not suspicious in nature, he said.

The blaze consists of construction materials such as drywall and lumber, so though it is highly combustible, Whittet said it contains no hazardous materials.

The "deep-seated" fire requires a lot of work to tackle, he said. Large water tenders are being employed to put it out and bulldozers are being used to "push out" extinguished matter, let it cool, and then cover it.

Firefighters are taking shifts due to the heat, but the Novato Fire Protection District has received mutual aid from Marin County Fire, Central Marin Fire and North Bay Fire, Whittet said.
