Flex Alert Extended Today From 3 pm-10 pm

OCEANSIDE, CA — At a media briefing earlier today the California ISO called for extending the flex alert for Thursday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. as temperatures continue to spike and strain the power grid.

California avoided rolling outages during the extreme heat on Wednesday when the flex alert ran from 4 pm - 9 pm. Today's alert extends the time by 2 additional hours as operators of the state’s electricity grid continued to warn that unprecedented demand on energy supplies could force them to periodically cut power to some customers.

The alert was extended for the ninth consecutive day Thursday, urging residents to take the following power-saving steps:

  • setting thermostats to 78 degrees or higher
  • avoiding use of major appliances
  • turning off unnecessary lights
  • avoid charging electric vehicles

Residents were also advised to pre-cool their homes as much as possible and close blinds and drapes to keep interiors cool.
