The student body at Vista Unified’s Grapevine Elementary School was thrilled by a high-energy, dual-language concert by Grammy ® and Latin Grammy ® Award-winning duo 123 Andrés on Wednesday, September 24th.

The schoolwide concert was produced for students and their families, filling a field at the school for a mid-day celebration; the concert was a festive way to enjoy Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 - October 15.

Grapevine’s DLI (Dual-Language Immersion) team discovered 123 Andrés at the California Bilingual Educators Conference and knew they would be a perfect fit for the school’s students.

123 Andrés’s music and books align perfectly with the school’s goal to enhance social and cultural competence and bilingual education. By inviting families to experience the group alongside their children, the school also presented learning experiences for the entire family.

“This is exposure to dual-language learning in a fun way that families can be part of,” says Grapevine Principal Myrna Hernandez. “We are always looking for those experiences where families can share. For those families that don’t speak Spanish at home, the parents can experience what their kids are learning and see new resources they can utilize together. And the same goes for those families who do speak Spanish at home.”

Hernandez emphasizes the ways that music can connect across language and cultural divides to bring students and families together.” It's a positive way to see how kids are learning, and it's fun music; everybody relates to the music, no matter if it's ABCs or one, two, threes.”

Corey Furlong, a parent of two children at the school, said that her kids were excited to see the people whose music they listen to. “They were both super excited that [123 Andrès] was going to be here today. It's a great way for them to learn and to get excited about learning another language.”

Having the group’s music and books as resources also helps Furlong learn Spanish alongside her children. “Helping them with homework alone helps me learn more, but stuff like this, watching it with them, it helps me and it inspires me to learn more with them.”

Vista Unified’s Expanding Dual-Language Programs
Grapevine is one of several Vista Unified schools with Dual-Language Immersion programs, a popular and growing option for VUSD students across all grade levels. Grapevine was selected as a host site for the San Diego County Office of Education’s annual bilingual education conference in January 2025, and the school’s students were also invited to participate in the countywide Bilingual Brilliance Student Showcase at San Diego State University.
