Skout's Honor Brings Peace And Harmony To Pets

OCEANSIDE, CA — At the Oceanside headquarters of Skout's Honor, not only is every day 'take your dog to work day' but the entire company is focused on making life better for our furry family members.

The company recently won a Pet Industry Recognition Award for their Skout's Honor Flea & Tick Collection as one of the Top Pet Products of 2021. The 20th annual Pet Business Industry Recognition Awards celebrate the most innovative products and companies in the pet care category.

The Patch reached out to Skout's Honor to get the scoop on the company and their top-of-the-line pet products.

As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted by a pack of happy dogs followed closely by the dog's owners, who also happened to be the management team, Founder Pete Stirling, VP of Marketing, Jenny Gilcrest and Marketing Manager, Tommy Shankland.

On the wall right next to the reception desk it says 'Peace and Harmony for Pets.' The love and care for the dogs is clearly reflected throughout Skout's Honor from the open, dog-friendly offices and staff, to the quality of the products the company makes.

Life Changing Pet Essentials

"We wanted to be more than just another pet supply company. We make life-changing essentials that include grooming and cleaning products for your house to pick up after your pets.

We've been around for about six years and we built our brand around bringing new and innovative technologies to the pet space. Flea and tick is the most recent collection that we've launched. But we are most known for our Probiotic Grooming and Wellness, which are a breakthrough in wellness for pets skin.

All of our product categories are rooted in nature, they exceed all of the standards for environmental responsibility and safety when it comes to ingredients. The products aren't just for dogs. They are for cats, too. In fact we use them on ourselves, we use it on our kids. It's all human grade products as well. There even being used on horses in the equestrian community as well."

Growing with Oceanside

"We feel like it's such great timing for a brand like ours to be here because everybody kind of has their eye on Oceanside right now. There's been so much growth and Oceanside has been flourishing with business brands coming in and I think we have an opportunity to play a role as one of the next brands to be part of Oceanside's growth and success.

It's like Oceanside as a location kind of mirrors what we're doing in the pet space as a company because we're on the edge of innovation and trend setting from a brand perspective with the pet industry as a whole, which is in a huge growth spurt. Oceanside is mirroring that same stage.

It also makes sense for us to be here. Most of the people who work here and started the company are surfers and so we've always had a connection to the beach cities. It just made sense to build our own community within the Oceanside community.

One of the big things that we hope to do in the new year is to get more involved in the community. Partner with more brands, get more involved in events and really show up and support other businesses as well."

The Founding of Skout's Honor

"My partner and I had a sunscreen company and working in the surf industry and we were sort of dabbling in environmentally friendly products, that kind of thing. I loved pets and love surfing. Then stumbled upon this revolutionary new green cleaning technology that was really well connected to California.

Some of the bigger pet product manufacturers had types of products with stuff they've used for the last 100 years that is no longer allowable for sale or manufacturing in California.

Our vision was to have a socially environmentally responsible company that focuses on bringing new emerging technologies to really improve the lives of pets and their people. We want to be the biggest player in this space. Our product actually helps strengthen the dogs natural defenses and prevent a lot of the underlying causes of itchiness, hotspots, redness, irritation, excessive shedding.

It's really satisfying to see the turnaround that you get with animals. We are the only company that has a probiotic product that has proven to deliver not only effectively to the surface of the skin but also that that probiotic has a specific benefit to the animal. So it's been a fun journey and we continue to see those non medicated natural alternative products get more and more attention.

We have developed a cult following of moms and dads and families who are using our products as bubble bath for everyone. We also use the products with our families because we know the products are safe and work amazing. It feels really good to be able to work for a brand and promote products that you feel good about."

Skout's Paw Pledge

"As part of our commitment to social responsibility we have a partnership with a group called the Rescue Bank and they partner with rescues all over the country. On every Skout's Honor product is a emblem that says 'Buy a bottle feed an animal'.

Any Skout's Honor product no matter where you buy it. Any retailer or on our website we donate a day's worth of food to an animal. We're about to hit the 10 million meal mark."

It's all in the Name

"Was there a Skout? Yeah. Skout's a German Short Hair Pointer. But it is a great name for us with the honesty and everything that we wanted to reflect in the brand."

It's all about the Products

"We listen to our customers a lot. We want to know if there's a problem that is not being addressed in the marketplace. Obviously, with Flea and Tick our ability to use new technologies was fairly limited. However, we were able to find some pretty neat tricks within the rule book that we could leverage to make a superior product. One of the things that was important to us, besides something that worked really well, was also something that smelled good and that I think was the biggest challenge that was not being addressed in the category. It's one of the things we really did focus on, which made it a little more difficult, but our customers, our pets are pretty happy with the results."
