59-Year-Old Man Convicted In Anaheim Homeless Shelter Stabbing

Alvaro Mendoza Sahagun was staying at the Salvation Army shelter in 2021 when he fatally stabbed 36-year-old Marcos Zavala.

SANTA ANA, CA — A 59-year-old man was convicted Wednesday for stabbing a man he was neighbors with at the Salvation Army's homeless shelter in Anaheim in 2021.

Alvaro Mendoza Sahagun was convicted of the March 14, 2021 second-degree murder of 36-year-old Marco Zavala. Sahagun's sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 12.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office said Zavala was arguing with his wife during the night at the shelter in the 1400 block of South Salvation Place.

The argument resulted in Sahagun asking Zavala to step outside where the 59-year-old man stabbed him, prosecutors said. Zavala was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Sahagun claimed Zavala attempted to rush him, but a witness told prosecutors they heard the 59-year-old saying "I just couldn't take it anymore" before the stabbing.
