Authorities Investigate Man's Death While In Santa Ana Police Custody

Santa Ana Police said the man died after being taken to a hospital for injuries he received while being taken into custody.

SANTA ANA, CA — The Santa Ana Police Department and Orange County District Attorney's Office are investigating the death of a man who died while in police custody Saturday.

Authorities have not yet released the man's name pending notification of his family, Santa Ana police said.

Police responded to the La Quinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham Orange County Airport around 11:45 p.m. on Friday after receiving word of a man breaking windows at the hotel and fighting security guards, Santa Ana police said.

The man was "hostile and combative" with the responding police officers and had "visible injuries to his hands and arms," authorities said.

"During their efforts to restrain the male, officers used force to place him into custody," Santa Ana police said in a statement. "The male was subsequently placed under arrest for several felony charges."

Paramedics treated the man for his injuries, and he was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center for further treatment.

He was pronounced dead the following morning around 8:55 a.m., according to Santa Ana police.
