Hours-Long Standoff Injures 1; Huntington Beach Man Arrested

The 49-year-old man barricaded himself inside a house in Huntington Beach for roughly six hours, authorities said.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA — A 49-year-old man who engaged in a six-hour standoff with police in Huntington Beach was taken into custody, police said Friday.

Huntington Beach Police officers were called at 3:30 p.m. Thursday to a house in the 5700 block of Edinger Avenue regarding a fight in process.

Upon arrival, the officers confronted the suspect, who immediately ran back inside, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.

The man, identified as Huntington Beach resident Zachary Romanak, refused to leave the house.

The HBPD's SWAT team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Major Crimes Unit and Drone Team responded to the incident.

At around 9:15 p.m., after several hours had already passed, the HBPD SWAT team deployed non-lethal ammunition and entered the home.

Romanak exited the house and was taken into custody at around 9:30 p.m., police said.

Officers found a victim inside the house who was severely injured during the standoff and took him to a hospital, police said.

Romanak was booked at the Huntington Beach City Jail.
