This Iconic CA Food Chain Is Opening Locations In Walmart Stores

The Walmart locations will serve the classic fast food eatery's full menu.

IRVINE, CA — Wienerschnitzel recently announced plans to open restaurants in Walmart stores across six states, including California.

The Irvine-based business will open a Walmart location at the big box store in Bakersfield as well as in five other Walmarts across Washington, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado. The eateries will be owned and operated by local franchisees and are expected to be serving customers by fall.

"These non-traditional formats allow us to modernize our footprint, bring our iconic flavors to new audiences, and reinforce the brand's relevance in today's evolving retail and dining landscape,” Director of Franchise Development Ted Milburn said in a May 28 company news release. “Growing inside these Walmart locations significantly expands our reach and opens the door for franchisees to tap into high-traffic locations with built-in demand."

The move is part of a bigger plan for the world’s largest hot dog franchise to focus on non-traditional growth. Wienerschnitzel is pursuing non-traditional venues to broaden its reach in high-traffic environments such as airports, military bases, theme parks, food courts and convenience stores.

"Wienerschnitzel has spent decades building a strong reputation, especially on the West Coast, and this expansion into Walmart stores signifies a new era of growth for the brand," Director of Franchise Expansion Shak Turner said in the news release.

The Walmart restaurant locations will serve Wienerschnitzel’s full menu, including the chili cheese dog, jalapeño poppers and Tastee Freez soft-serve desserts.

Founded in Wilmington in 1961, Wienerschnitzel now has 340 franchised locations across 13 states and more than 50 units in stages of development nationwide.
