Man ID'd In Possible DUI Crash That Injured 7 Teen Athletes: Police

A 27-year-old Anaheim man accused of hitting a group of Anaheim High School track athletes during a practice run was identified.

ANAHEIM, CA — Anaheim police officials identified the man accused of hitting a group of Anaheim High School track athletes during a practice run with his vehicle was identified, FOX11 reported.

Police say the track team was on the southwest corner of North Harbor Boulevard and North Street sidewalk waiting to cross just before 3 p.m. when the driver swerved off the road and struck them.

The students were all taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said. They all had various types of injuries, according to police. Their conditions were not immediately known.

"As a parent myself, you send your kids to school, you trust they're gonna be safe and a tragedy like this happens. It's very unfortunate," Anaheim PD Sgt. Matt Sutter told CBS News. "I feel sorry for the coach who had to see this happen to his kids."

The driver, identified by authorities as a 27-year-old Anaheim resident, was also taken to the hospital for treatment, police said.

Officers arrested the 27-year-old driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to CBS News. He was identified as Anaheim resident Anthony Alva-Palafox, according to FOX11.

The team's coach was running behind the students when the collision happened, police said.
