While the holidays often are a time for warmth, togetherness, and sharing a good meal, for adults with developmental disabilities this season can be challenging.

That’s why Costs Mesa-based nonprofit Project Independence (PI) has launched its Independence At The Table campaign to raise funds and kitchen staples and supplies so their clients can experience the holiday spirit many of us take for granted.

“Our Independence At The Table campaign invites everyone to lift up our community by donating groceries, kitchen supplies or cash to support adults in our Independent Living Program,” said PI’s CEO Robert Watson. “Every gift, big or small, helps create a more independent, confident, and nourishing holiday season for the people we serve. Thank you.”

Watson said that PI has created an easy-to-use way to participate in the program online, using an Amazon wish list for groceries like pantry staples, easy-to-prepare meals, and festive holiday ingredients, as well as for giving kitchen essentials like cookware, utensils, mixing bowls, cutting boards, storage containers, and simple appliances. Cash donations can be made through the nonprofit’s secure PayPal page.

The Independent Living program has assisted hundreds of people who have taken those bold steps to move out of group homes, family households, and other facilities, into homes – and lives – of their own. Each step of this journey is taken with the support of PI staff, from deciding where to live and picking a roommate, to providing whatever tools are needed to take those successful steps toward independence.

From benefits and budgeting, to planning menus, grocery shopping, and helping prepare meals, to prioritizing housekeeping and laundry tasks, at each step PI staff listen to the needs of the people served.

“Our goal is to ensure that peoples’ needs are met while always encouraging and fostering independence and choice,” said Watson.

PI has more than four decades of service and stability in Orange County as a lifeline to adults with developmental disabilities. Eighty-seven cents of every dollar raised goes directly to support vital programs for people with developmental disabilities.
