Sheriff's SUV Fatally Runs Down Pedestrian In OC: Police

Police Thursday were continuing their investigation of a fatal crash between an Orange County Sheriff's Department SUV and a pedestrian.

ORANGE, CA — The investigation of a fatal crash between an Orange County Sheriff's Department's vehicle and a pedestrian in Orange was continuing Thursday.

Orange Police Department officers were called to the scene at Chapman Avenue and Prospect Street at around 10:15 p.m. regarding a crash.

A preliminary investigation showed that the victim was walking across the street outside of the crosswalk when he was hit by the sheriff's department's SUV, KABC 7 reported.

The deputy driving the SUV was not driving with lights and sirens on when it hit the man, FOX 11 reported.

KABC 7 reported the sheriff's vehicle received significant damage to its front windshield in the crash.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange Fire Department firefighter-paramedics.

The collision closed traffic between Prospect and James streets for several hours while police investigated the circumstances surrounding the collision.
