📰 Here are the top stories in Orange County today:

  1. A 72-year-old Orange County Superior Court judge is suspected of fatally shooting his wife in Anaheim Hills. The couple was married in 1996. He was arrested. A court hearing is scheduled for Monday in Santa Ana. (Patch, AP)
  2. The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) responded to a home fire in Cypress’ 4300 block of Via Largo. The accidental fire originated in a backyard workshop and spread to the two-story residence. In addition to battling the flames, firefighters used salvage covers to protect the home’s content from water damage. “Two people are displaced, but we’re happy to report they made it out safely with their dog, rat, and tortoise, Kevin, which got a helping hand from a firefighter.” (OCFA)
  3. The Garden Grove Unified School District hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Rancho Alamitos High School to declare its new sports facility open. It is a “state-of-the-art athletic facility, which features a nine-lane all-weather synthetic turf track and field.” In addition to the track, there are long and triple jump pits as well as equipment and bleachers. (Orange County Tribune)
  4. PRIDE flag update: The North OC Community College District overruled its board trustee’s suggestion to ban flying any flags other than the American one. Critics said that the U.S. flag doesn’t represent inclusion the way the PRIDE flag does. Proponents argued that the ban would have provided campus neutrality. (Fullerton Observer)
  5. Check out Dana Point’s Lantern Bay Park stair mosaic! The art installation is almost finished. Come to the ribbon cutting of the 128-panel piece on Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. and meet Mia Tavonatti, the artist. (Patch)
