Deadly Rip Currents, High Surf Bring Danger To Will Rogers Beach

PACIFIC PALISADES, CA — Lifeguards warned beachgoers at crowded Los Angeles County beaches, including Will Rogers State Beach, about possibly deadly conditions and an increased drowning risk.

According to the National Weather Service, starting Tuesday morning, dangerous rip currents and waves up to 6-feet tall will impact beaches in LA County. The waves will come in quickly, forecasters said, and swimmers were warned to stay clear.

“Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly locations in such conditions, so stay off the rocks,” the weather service said.

Surf height is expected to built to 3 to 6 feet by Tuesday and will be 4 to 6 feet Wednesday.

Rip current risk is forecast to be high both days.

The dangerous ocean conditions include an increased risk of drowning due to strong rip currents that can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, officials said. The NWS said the waves may wash people off of beaches and rocks and capsize small boats near the shore.

The hazard statement is in effect through Thursday evening, forecasters said.
