PACIFIC PALISADES, CA — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has cleared fire debris from the Palisades Branch Library, the mayor's office announced Thursday, allowing city officials to take the next steps in rebuilding the facility.

The Army Corps expected to complete debris removal at the library in 30 days, but finished the job in just six. Mayor Karen Bass lauded the milestone, 24 days ahead of schedule, as part of a recovery effort she said is on track to be the "fastest in modern California history."

City Librarian John Szabo praised the "thoughtful attention" the Army Corps showed when they honored library officials' request to preserving elements of the library. "We have a renewed sense of hope as we consider the possibilities for what comes next," he said.

City Councilwoman Traci Park, who represents the Palisades, thanked the Army Corps, Col. Brian Sawser and Capt. Sheldon Tausch for their service.

"It's critical that we stay focused on removing the roadblocks that slow down recovery," Park said. "I'm glad to be working with the mayor to keep these efforts moving forward so that we can help people get home faster."

Bass said in a statement her top priority includes "rebuilding the places that make up the heart of this community."

"These are city-owned properties and we've worked with the (Army Corps) to prioritize debris removal at each of them, including the Palisades Branch Library, to expedite the timeline to get them rebuilt and returned to this community," she said.
