Making Species Conservation More Affordable

A new Stanford-led study supports one approach to protecting all species in an area -- the ones we know about and the ones we don't.

PALO ALTO, CA -- New Stanford University research has developed a packaged version of species conservation that may be a better sell to stakeholders. This conservation scheme focuses broadly on what are known as eco-regions.

These regions are geographically unique regions such as deserts and rainforests that contain distinct communities of plants and animals, the Stanford News Service reported.

Scientists have long debated how well eco-region borders separate species in communities. A new study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution provides compelling evidence that eco-regions divide plant and animal communities well. Combining conservation efforts will allow the funding to go further.
