Active Fault Off Palos Verdes Coast Strikes Again With Series Of Earthquakes

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — A series of four earthquakes — the strongest of which was a magnitude 3.4 — struck off the Palos Verdes coast over the weekend.

Sunday's maritime earthquakes were centered west of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and about 15 miles south of Malibu.

The first, a 3.1, hit at 3:35 a.m. Seismic activity was the quiet until nightfall — Sunday's largest quake, a 3.4, struck at 8:27 p.m. A 2.0 struck about 13 minutes later, followed by another 2.0 at 9:43 p.m. The final quake, yet another 2.0, struck at 11:27 p.m.

The temblors ranged in depth from 0.1 miles to 9.4 miles The magnitude 3.4 quake occurred at a depth of 0.1 miles, according to QuakeFeed.

A March 9 magnitude 4.1 quake was the seventh magnitude 4 or larger earthquake ever recorded in the area, however quake activity in the Malibu area has picked up over the last year with a magnitude 4.7 temblor in September.
