Bicyclists Staging 'Die-In' in Palos Verdes Estates to Protest City's Inaction

Safety groups are organizing the "die-in" because of three bicyclists deaths in Palos Verdes Estates this year.

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, CA -- A group of bicyclists is planning a "die-in" Tuesday at Malaga Cove to protest the lack safe bicycle lanes in the city.

The "die-in" is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Malaga Cove. The Cyclists For PV & So Cal Bike Safety groups are calling for five safety signs to be posted around bike routes in Palos Verdes Estates. The traffic signs were unanimously recommended by city staff and the City Traffic Safety Committee, according to the organizers.

The groups are organizing the "die-in" because of three bicyclists deaths in Palos Verdes Estates this year and yet the City Council has yet to address the issue, according to organizers.

"The Council has ignored myriad scientific recommendations, including the US National Institutes of Health," Michael Barraclough said in a prepared statement. "We will no longer stand by while our families and friends die on our streets and fear riding their bikes. Palos Verdes Estates must protect families legally using our public roads."
