Lunada Bay Boys 'Fort' Demolition Starts

The Coastal Commission had threatened to take legal action against Palos Verdes Estate last summer if the city doesn't take the "fort" down.

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, CA -- City workers have started to demolish a stone "fort" illegally built by the Lunada Bay Boys, a surf gang that has been accused of using violence to keep non-locals away from the choice surfing spot in Palos Verdes Estate.

A helicopter was used on Monday to bring a jackhammer and other equipment to tear town the stone and wood shelter. The "fort," which was believed to have been erected some 30 years ago, has a roof, stone table and a barbecue area. Residents have said that the fort was enjoyed by the community.

The California Coastal Commission had threatened to take legal action against Palos Verdes Estate last summer if the city doesn't take the "fort" down to improve access to the bay or get permits for it.
