RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — School attendance dropped by about 10 percent this week in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District as omicron cases rise across the Southland, The New York Times reports.

About 10,000 students returned to the classroom this week to begin the new year, Alex Cherniss, the superintendent of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, told The Times.

It's unlike anything the district has seen since the pandemic began. By Tuesday, attendance dropped as testing for students and staff found about 170 people had coronavirus.
