Man Arrested On Annoying A Child Charge, Petaluma Police Say

It is alleged that the 64-year-old man approached two girls ages 15 and 16 and asked them if they wanted to have sex, police said.

PETALUMA, CA — A Petaluma man was arrested on suspicion of annoying a child in connection with an incident at a local park, police said Friday.

Two girls aged 15 and 16 told police they were sitting at Walnut Park around 9:30 a.m. Thursday when a man approached them and asked if they wanted to have sex. The victims immediately left the area and called the Petaluma Police Department to report the incident, Petaluma police Lt. Matthew Parnow said.

Officers responded to the park and detained 64-year-old Petaluma resident Robert Theodore Hofmann, whom the victims confirmed as the man who approached them.

After a records check revealed he was on Sonoma County probation, Hofmann was taken to Sonoma County jail where he was booked on suspicion of annoying a child and violating his probation.

Jail records showed Hofmann remained in custody Friday, with his bail set at $16,000 and a court appearance set for Monday.
