Arrest Made In Hercules Bicyclist's Death, CHP Says

The 28-year-old is suspected of hit-and-run in the death Tuesday of a 42-year-old Hercules man in Crockett.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A 28-year-old Martinez woman has been arrested in the hit-and-run
death Tuesday night in Crockett of a 42-year-old Hercules bicyclist. Kylie Lanae Derksen was taken into custody at about 2 a.m. today at her home after the California Highway Patrol received an anonymous tip
late Wednesday night, and being contacted by Derksen herself shortly thereafter, CHP Officer Brandon Correia said this morning.

Derksen told CHP investigators she was "possibly involved" in a collision Tuesday night, Correia said. Using witness statements and other information, CHP investigators quickly obtained a warrant for Derksen's arrest, Correia said. She was taken to the County Jail in Martinez, where she was being held this morning in lieu
of $100,000 bail. She will be charged on suspicion of one count of felony vehicular manslaughter and one count of suspicion of felony hit and run.

Contra Costa County District Attorney spokesman Scott Alonso said his office had not yet received formal charges this morning, and that no arraignment date had yet been set.

Christopher Bunag, 42, of Hercules was bicycling along San Pablo Avenue near The Dead Fish restaurant when he was hit at about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday by a vehicle that didn't stop. Bunag died at the scene.

The vehicle involved was not a blue pickup truck, as the CHP was initially told, Correia said, but rather a red Mini Cooper.

Correia credited the media and citizens using social media for keeping the case in the public eye, which helped result in Derksen's arrest.
