The West Contra Costa Public Education Fund announced its 2011 scholarship winners at Wednesday night's school board meeting, with one student from Hercules, Margarita Romo-Romo, taking an award.
A total of $50,000 will be granted to the 20 graduating high school students hailing from six schools in the West Contra Costa Unified School District.
Each student will receive $2,500 to put toward college costs.
"We're very proud of our award winners," said Joel Mackey, executive director of the Education Fund. "They work very hard in school. They've all maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average and they've done this amidst many obstacles in their lives. They've overcome a lot in order to be where they are today."
The Education Fund has been selecting scholars for the past six years and has awarded over half a million dollars for college expenses.
Hercules student Romo-Romo will be matriculating in the fall at UC Santa Cruz.
