Cheat Day Adventures: Freewheel Pizza - Clayton, CA

In the grand quest for my next calorific indulgence, my taste buds screamed, "Pizza!" So, like any modern-day adventurer, I consulted the oracle of our times: Google. And lo and behold, I stumbled upon the enigmatic 'Freewheel Pizza.'

Now, here's the twist: Freewheel doesn't just toss out pizzas like confetti at a parade. Oh no, they have a daily cap. Remember the days when Facebook was the exclusive club you needed a .edu or business email to join? Freewheel's pizza exclusivity had the same allure.

A cursory glance at their website, and I thought, "Ah, artisan-style mini pizzas!" But, dear reader, as the old adage goes, "Assumptions are the mother of all... misunderstandings."

I set my heart on the Detroit-style and the tantalizingly named 'Freewheel Mozz & Marinara.' But finding this elusive pizzeria was akin to a treasure hunt. Circling a shopping center, debating with Google Maps, and having a minor existential crisis, I finally had an epiphany: "That photo looks suspiciously alley-esque."

And in that alley, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, stood Freewheel. And their pizzas? Not dainty little things, but mammoth discs of deliciousness. I had unwittingly ordered enough to feed a small village on my so-called 'cheat day.'

The Detroit-style? A revelation. A crust so perfect, it could've been crafted by the gods. The sauce danced between tangy and sweet, and the freshly grated cheese drizzle was the pièce de résistance. I've dabbled in the deep-dish delights of Chicago and the sprawling slices of New York, but this Detroit darling? Top of the charts.

The Freewheel Mozz & Marinara was a nod to the classic New York style but with a gourmet twist. It was a behemoth of a pizza, leaving me delightfully stuffed, not grease-laden and regretful.

While the Detroit style stole my heart, I wouldn't turn my nose up at their hand-tossed New York variant. The damage? A cool $60 for the two. But for a family soirée, one would suffice.

Would I brave the alleys for another cheat day at Freewheel? In a New York (or should I say Detroit) minute!
