After 12 years, downtown Pleasant Hill is still the source of disagreement among residents and visitors alike.

First opened in 2000, it was greeted by some as a long-needed center for a city that had never really had one. Others found it to be a municipal version of the Monkees, Milli Vanilli or Jessica Simpson.

And today, that debate continues.

But if the success of a downtown – whether it be an ‘organic’ one or, like Pleasant Hill’s, shaped from an architect’s vision – is measured by the way it attracts people, then downtown Pleasant Hill is definitely a success.
