Amador Valley High Students Compete in ‘We the People’ Competition

Pleasanton Unified Schools congratulate the Amador Valley HS competitive civics team for finishing in 5th place in the national competition.

From Pleasanton Unified School District: Pleasanton Unified School District congratulates Amador Valley High School competitive civics team for finishing in 5th place in the National ‘We the People’ competition held in Washington D.C. on April 21-24, 2017. We the People is a national educational program which promotes civic competence and responsibility.

Amador represented California in the national competition after placing first in the state We the
People competition held in February.

"We had a terrific team this year. The kids worked really hard and it paid off for them at nationals,” said
Amador competitive civics coach Stacey Sklar. “I am proud of their efforts."

Led by Sklar, the Amador competitive civics team has had an impressive history of wins in the We the
People competition. The Amador team has advanced to Nationals 15 times, and finished among the top
10 teams 13 times. In 1995, Amador was the National Champions; in 1996, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011,
2013, 2104 they were the National Runners-ups; in 1994 and 2009, Amador received 3rd place at
Nationals; in 2008, Amador finished 4th place in Nationals; and in 2015, Amador finished 6th place in
Nationals.

"I want to extend a huge congratulations to our Amador competitive civics team and their advisor, Stacy
Sklar,” said Amador Valley High School Principal Michael Williams. “Our students and staff dedicated
countless hours to prepare for nationals and this impressive finish."

‘We the People’ Competitions involve mock congressional hearings in which students are required to
prepare informational speeches and and answer follow up questions from a panel of judges.

The Amador Competitive Civics team is still fundraising to pay for expenses from their trip to Nationals.
